A Deeper Look at Furnace Construction
February 14th - March 22ndEddie Bernard |
Rebuilding a glass furnace is a rare opportunity - it is the dirty work behind the scenes, the work that when done well makes great glass possible. In this class students will learn to mix mortar and lay bricks; mix and install refractory castable cement; work with a variety of insulating materials; and start up a furnace safely.
Students will be able to participate in this hands-on workshop to the extent of their own comfort level. There is typically a great sense of camaraderie in this class, as notes are compared and questions are answered. Topics covered will include insulation types and applications, combustion, safety and control systems, troubleshooting, factors involved in energy efficiency, and other equipment-related topics raised by students as time permits.
