As part of our commitment to the development of a healthy and creative environment UrbanGlass often offers workshops outside the scope of our studio based classes. Focused on both the artistic and physical well being of our students, these classes range widely in subject matter and are designed to add richness to both your studio practice and everyday life.

Hot Glass Studio

Studio glassblowing has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, commemorating the transition of glass from factories into artist studios as a creative medium. At UrbanGlass learn the tools and techniques that have been used to blow and sculpt glass for over two thousand years. Introductory classes start with the basics of safety and shape, while advanced classes focus on specific techniques, best practices and innovations in the field.

Flameworking and Neon Studio

The term flameworking - traditionally known as lampworking - encompasses the many different types of glasswork created with a torch. Artists use glass rods or hollow glass tubes softened by the heat of the torch to create detailed sculptures, functional vessels, hollow forms, pendants and beads. UrbanGlass’ flameworking curriculum explores the basics of beadmaking all the way through the subtleties of detailed glass sculpture.

Stained Glass and Imagery Studio

Stained glass techniques have been widely used for over a thousands years to create decorative panels and windows using colorful pieces of glass bound together by strips of lead cane and solder. Stained glass at UrbanGlass starts with the basics of designing, cutting and piecing together these unique creations. We offer courses on glass painting, as well as coldworking techniques to further enhance your work.

Casting and Kilnforming Studio

Kilnforming refers to the spectrum of techniques that use the heat of the kiln to transform and shape glass, among them slumping, fusing and kiln casting. Introductory kilnforming classes at UrbanGlass explore the fundamentals of cutting flat glass to create shapes and patterns, the use of crushed or powdered glass, and how these elements are transformed once inside the kiln. Intermediate and advanced classes hone techniques, explore kiln scheduling, and delve into mold making for kiln casting.

Coldworking Studio

The tools of the cold shop are used to carve, shape, polish, decorate and finish cold glass. Similar to the equipment found in a typical wood or metal shop, the cold shop contains saws, drill presses,flat grinders, belt sanders, lathes, lapidary wheels and a sandblaster specific for working with glass. Some artists work primarily in the coldshop to create the specialized surface textures and designs unique to their work. UrbanGlass’ coldworking classes start with a focus on safety, and expand into exploring the many dynamic ways coldwork enhances and compliments handmade glass work.

Youth & All Ages Classes

UrbanGlass offers classes in a variety of glassmaking techniques designed for young artists from 11 to 18 years of age. These workshops are designed to introduce students to this unique material and expand the breadth and depth of their art making activities. Whether you are looking to make your portfolio jump out of the college admissions pile or merely searching for an exciting creative outlet, try one of our weekend glass classes. While these classes are specifically designed for younger students, if they don’t fit your busy schedule please give us a call or send an email, we may be able to include you in some of the adult level classes.
